Major League Soccer was born in 1996 but exploded on to the global stage a decade later when LA Galaxy tempted English legend David Beckham to sign for them. His five-year spell dramatically rose the league profile and in his final two seasons Galaxy lifted back to back MLS Cups.

The California club are the most successful with five MLS cups and their roster at StubHub Center has included England stars Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole, Robbie Keane of the Republic Ireland, USA striker Landon Donovan and, in 2018, Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimović.

New York has its own derby with two clubs – City and Red Bulls – while England’s Wayne Rooney has made the move to DC United in Washington.

Some clubs share NFL or baseball arenas but a growing number are building their own purpose-built stadiums. Attendances now average more than 20,000 per game, with Atlanta United and Seattle Sounders frequently attracting more than double that number.
