It’s also a sporting capital with a dozen clubs competing in the football league, all within easy reach. See Arsenal at the stylish Emirates, Chelsea at the famous Stamford Bridge, West Ham in the London Stadium or Spurs in their new stadium.

Take in a tour of Wembley Stadium, the 90,000 capacity spiritual home of football, or take in a different experience at other major sporting venues – rugby at Twickenham, cricket at Lords or tennis at Wimbledon.

New York

A stay in the Big Apple is an assault on the senses. Visiting this gateway to the USA is like stepping on to a giant film set, and the skyscrapers that form the Manhattan skyline never fail to impress, particularly at night.

Madrid

Madrid is the capital of Spain but it deserves its alternative title as the capital of European football. It is home to Real Madrid, the most successful club side on the continent who have a home, the Santiago Bernabéu, deserving of their status.

But their city rivals Atlético have challenged the Real-Barca duopoly and now have a brand new stadium to boot. There are more clubs to visit in Madrid too, including Getafe and the people’s club, Rayo Vallecano.
